StephenXuThis coin is a hand-engraved “hobo nickel” artwork titled Lure, created by the artist Stephen Xu.
The base coin is an 1882 Morgan Dollar, carved and modified to create a detailed and expressive scene.
Front (Obverse) – Engraved Artwork
The original profile of Lady Liberty has been completely transformed into a dramatic engraving showing two characters:
- A devil-like figure with horns, pointed ears, and a muscular torso stands in the foreground, holding a long pointed tool.
- A second character, appearing distressed or entranced, leans forward while the devil manipulates the tool near their face.
- The background is carved with swirling circular patterns and stylized moons or celestial shapes.
- Small colored inlays are present near the bottom—green and red stones—adding contrast to the monochromatic relief.
- The original coin date, 1882, remains at the bottom, integrated into the artwork.
- Tiny details such as a bottle labeled “Wine Stx”, a cork, and small objects on the table create a narrative, enhancing the theme of temptation or manipulation.
The engraving is highly detailed, with deep relief work and intricate textures.
Back (Reverse) – Original Coin
The reverse side remains unaltered, showing the standard design of a Peace Dollar (used as a replacement back by the artist):
- A perched eagle facing right.
- Rays extending upward.
- The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “PEACE.”
