The Significance of the Volcanoes in Mexican Culture

According to Aztec legend, these two volcanoes represent a tragic love story: Popocatépetl was a warrior, and Iztaccíhuatl was a princess. When she died of grief believing him to be lost in battle, the gods transformed them into mountains so they could be together forever — he stands vigil with a torch (smoke), while she lies in eternal rest.
